I know very little about love. Which is why rarely write about it.
But, it's Valentine's day, so what the heck? I'll throw in what my heart "believes", because, as I said, intellectually, love makes very little sense to me- it's fluid, ever-changing, and a moving target. As soon as I think I have a grasp on it, something little shifts its course, and I start to relearn it. Or something big, booming, and cataclysmic happens, and I have to relearn it.
What I believe is this: Love is worth believing in. Subscribing to. Working for. Fighting for. And waiting for.
Valentine's Day seems to bring out either the over-the-top, love-can-do-no-wrong, mushy folks, or the this-sucks-and-I-hate-everything-about-this-day-and-love cynics. I can't help but believe both sides are out of touch with their heart center... What love- real love...the REALLY good kind- feels and looks like.
I believe (and know) that love takes on all kinds of forms and shapes (that whole fluidity thing), but what I believe about "real love" is this:
I believe a lot more, obviously, but find these ideals at the bedrock of my thoughts on love.
I don't believe there's one great love in life. I think our life is sprinkled with lots of amazing opportunities, and experiences, and people who help us write our own stories. All of them are great, and all of them are love...but ultimately, I don't think their purpose is to be our "great love"...I think their purpose is in helping us CREATE, and give, and LIVE great love. They're meant to keep us full so we can give to those who are empty. They're meant to expand us so we can be brave and bold and live really amazing, fantastic lives. Love- even love that comes and goes- doesn't leave you jaded. It leaves you better, and stronger, and less cynical, and more optimistic. It loves you so well and so completely that it leaves you believing that maybe the love of your life...is YOU. And if you're lucky enough, you get to do and be the same for someone else. And when things are really beautiful, and the stars align in just the right way, you just might get to share that adventure with someone else.
Happy Valentine's Day. Wherever you are, and whoever you love, or is loving you, it's a pretty perfect day to honor all the kinds of love in your life. Pretty awesome. :)
